Partial hospitalization provides a structured program for outpatient psychiatric services as an alternative to inpatient psychiatric care. This kind of treatment is more intensive than what a person receives in a therapist’s office. It is provided during the day and enables the person to leave after sessions.
This program is a very structured day program that provides several hours of therapy and skill-building groups each day. In the PHP program, individuals will participate in a daily routine but will go back home each night. Individuals who have been struggling with substance abuse and addiction, mental health disorders, and/or behavioral health could benefit from the partial hospitalization program.
Individuals who wish to have their treatment through PHP must be able to live independently and should not be in need of round-the-clock care. They should also be able to secure living and housing arrangements since PHP does not require an overnight stay in the hospital. They must also have a level of stability so that they will be able to fully participate in the treatment process.
This form of treatment also aims to focus on the participants’ strength, needs, and treatment goals. Before undergoing through sessions, patients have to undergo a thorough Psychosocial assessment or have to submit a documentation of the assessment that was completed at the inpatient or residential program that they completed prior to transitioning into PHP. This will help the professionals who are conducting the treatment sessions to have all the vital information for them to formulate an individualized treatment plan that they will use in the entire course of the program.
These individualized treatment plans will include different therapeutic interventions including the following:
- Medication Management
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Family therapy
This program treatment can last from one to six months or as little as one week. Before the program finishes, the treatment team helps make a plan for the individual’s ongoing care and makes sure they have all the information they need, such as important phone numbers and medication information.
